Set up locations

Create the bins, areas, and sites stock lives in, and control what each one is allowed to do.

Locations are the places stock lives, from a whole site down to a single bin. Every quantity Workcell tracks sits at a location, so setting these up well is what makes stock, picking, and receiving accurate.

Create a location

  1. Go to Inventory > Locations and select New location.
  2. Give it a name and a unique code (for example, RM-A-01).
  3. Choose a location type. The type sets sensible defaults for the flags below, so most locations need no further tuning.
  4. Optionally set a parent location to nest it (a bin inside an aisle inside a site). Save.

What a location is allowed to do

A few flags control how a location behaves. The location type fills these in by default; override them per location when needed:

  • Receivable - inbound receipts can land here.
  • Pickable and Shippable - stock here can be picked and shipped.
  • Holds available - stock here counts toward availability. Turn this off for quarantine or QC-hold areas so the material is not promised to orders.
  • Virtual - a non-physical location, such as a scrap or in-transit bin.
  • Allows negative - permits the on-hand to go below zero (rare; for specific contra-flows).

Keep them current

  • Edit a location to change its details or flags.
  • Mark a location inactive to retire it without losing its history. A location can only be deleted when it holds no stock.

Where to go next

  • Put stock into locations by receiving and putting away.
  • Move stock between locations with a transfer.
