CAPA statuses

What each CAPA status means and which actions are available in it.

Every CAPA sits in exactly one status. The status moves as the 8D steps are worked, and it controls when the CAPA can be edited or closed.

The statuses

StatusMeaningWhat you can do
OpenCreated but no step worked yet, at step D0.Document a step, edit, assign owner, or close.
In progressAt least one discipline is being worked.Document and complete steps, edit, assign owner, or close.
Pending verificationThe prevent-recurrence step (D7) is done; awaiting verification.Document remaining steps, or close.
ClosedFinalized, with a close date recorded. Read-only.None.

How they connect

The following diagram shows how a CAPA moves between statuses:

CAPA status flow: Open to In progress to Pending verification to Closed

  • Documenting content on an Open CAPA moves it to In progress.
  • Completing each step advances the current step (D0 through D8). Completing D7 moves the CAPA to Pending verification.
  • Close is available at any point and is the final step; it records the close date and makes the CAPA read-only.

Editing rules

  • Steps and fields are editable while Open or In progress.
  • Once Closed, steps can no longer be edited or completed.
