Create an item
Define a part, material, or finished good so it can be sold, bought, made, or stocked.
An item is the most basic record in Workcell. Everything else, a BOM, a routing, a sales order line, a purchase order line, a work order, points back to an item. Before you can sell, buy, make, or stock something, it has to exist here.
Create the item
- Go to Engineering > Items and select New item.
- Give it a name and an optional SKU. Add a description if it helps the people downstream pick the right part.
- Choose the source: Make if you build it, Buy if you purchase it.
- Choose the type: Raw, WIP, Finished, Service, or Consumable.
- Set the unit of measure (each, kg, ft, and so on). This is the unit every quantity for this item is counted in.
- Save. The item is now usable everywhere in Workcell.
Fill in the details that matter downstream
You do not have to set everything at once, but these fields drive other modules:
- Tracking flags decide how inventory follows the item: track inventory, track lots, track serials, and inspection required.
- Costing and pricing: standard cost is what Accounting values it at, list price is the default sell price.
- Stocking rules: safety stock, reorder point, reorder quantity, and lead time feed planning.
- Purchasing: set a default vendor and minimum order quantity for a Buy item.
- Sell and buy flags (is sellable, is purchasable) control where the item can appear.

Where to go next
- For a Make item, list what goes into it in Build a BOM.
- Define how it is made in Create a routing.
- For how an item's definition is versioned, see Revisions and change control.
- See where items are stocked in Inventory.
