BOM and routing statuses
What each BOM, routing, and item revision status means and which actions are available in it.
BOMs, routings, and item revisions share the same shape of lifecycle: they start editable in Draft, lock when Released, and end in a retired state. The status controls what you can edit and whether Production can build from the record.
BOM statuses
| Status | Meaning | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Draft | Being built or revised. Editable. | Add and edit lines, release. |
| Released | The version Production builds from. Locked. | Revise (new draft version), or obsolete. |
| Obsolete | Retired. No longer used. | None. |
The following diagram shows how a BOM moves between statuses:
Releasing a BOM requires exactly one Primary line that matches the BOM's item, and every line must have a positive quantity.
Routing statuses
| Status | Meaning | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Draft | Being built or revised. Editable. | Add and edit operations, release. |
| Released | The version Production builds from. Locked. | Revise (new draft version), or obsolete. |
| Obsolete | Retired. No longer used. | None. |
A routing follows the same flow:
Releasing a routing requires at least one operation, and setup and run times cannot be negative.
Item revision statuses
| Status | Meaning | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Draft | New revision being prepared. Editable. | Release, or obsolete. |
| Released | The current effective revision. | Obsolete. (Releasing a newer one supersedes it.) |
| Superseded | Replaced by a later released revision. | None. |
| Obsolete | Retired. | None. |
The following diagram shows how an item revision moves between statuses:
Releasing a new item revision automatically supersedes the prior released revision for that item and sets its effectivity dates.
Editing rules
- Only a Draft record is freely editable. To change a released BOM or routing, revise it into a new draft version, edit that, then release.
- A released definition stays on record after it is superseded or made obsolete, so history of what was built remains intact.
Where to go next
- Build and release a BOM in Build a BOM.
- Build and release a routing in Create a routing.
- For how revisions are promoted under control, see Revisions and change control.
