Quote Formula Explained

This calculator uses a standard job costing approach to calculate quotes. Here's how each component works.

Quote = (Material + Setup + Run + Secondary) × (1 + Markup%)

Per Part Price = Quote ÷ Quantity

Cost Components

Material Cost

Material per unit × Quantity

Setup Cost

(Setup time ÷ 60) × Shop rate × Operations

Run Cost

(Cycle time × Quantity ÷ 60) × Shop rate × Operations

Secondary Costs

Secondary cost per unit × Quantity

Markup vs Margin

Markup is applied to your total cost to determine the selling price. Margin is the percentage of the selling price that is profit.

Example: $1,000 cost with 25% markup

Quote: $1,000 × 1.25 = $1,250

Margin: $250 ÷ $1,250 = 20%

Tips for Accurate Quotes

Getting your quotes right means winning more jobs at better margins. Here are common pitfalls to avoid.

Don't Forget

  • Material waste/scrap factor (typically 5-15%)
  • Tool wear and consumables
  • Programming time for new parts
  • Inspection and quality control time
  • Shipping and packaging costs

Shop Rate Considerations

  • Include overhead (rent, utilities, insurance)
  • Account for machine depreciation
  • Different machines may have different rates
  • Factor in realistic utilization (not 100%)
  • Review rates annually as costs change
